MICRO-CREDIT SCHEME FOR PROMOTING ECONOMIC SELF-RELIANCE FOR WOMEN IN VULNERABLE SITUATIONS IN MALAYSIA
INTRODUCTION
Women make up half of the 23 million population of Malaysia. They represent 36% of the workforce. However, half of this comprise of women working as unpaid family workers. In 1999, the Women’s Aid Organization (WAO) reported that Malaysian women face much discrimination in the areas of marriage and divorce, through attitudes towards expected roles of women, and through the formulation, interpretation of laws. Considering the unequal status women in society, their vulnerability greatly increase when there is disharmony in the family, when there is poverty and when they are widowed. In pushing forward the women’s agenda, Linsys Foundation, therefore proposes this project to assist poor women by promoting their self-reliance through financial assistance and training to gain confidence in themselves.
OBJECTIVE
To provide a source of livelihood for disfranchised women and to empower them to grow and be financially independent.
